QQC #2

Quote: "Whatever my family background was, I would overcome all difficulties" (Jiang 199).

Question: Does family background truly affect your future?

Comment: I really wonder what factors are looked at when people form opinions of each other. Clothes, likes, dislikes, interests, etc. are the norm, along with choice in friends, but what about family? The famous "You can pick your friends, but not your family" line comes to mind; but do people always overlook your family, even if you had no control of it? For example, what if your family is filled with criminals? I'm sure a few people would act more wearily around you, as compared to someone from a family of policemen. Or, what if, for generations, your family were doctors? Would people expect you to be an expert in the medical field? Would you be given preference for acceptance to a medical school? It might be surprising for that person to go into a different field, say, the movie business to be an actor.

Though it might not pretty, the idea that people judge you on, or at least factor in, your family background seems truthful. People might act differently around you if they hear what your family is like. On a hopeful note, however, it isn't likely you'll be discriminated against because of your family; you might just have to work harder to reach your goals, like Ji-li.
