2. Ji-li Jiang, a twelve year old girl living in Shanghai, has her life turned upside down when the Chinese Cultural Revolution is launched. Her family is considered part of the 5 Black Categories, and her class status turns her into a public enemy. She is constantly humiliated by classmates and neighbors, and the Red Guards, enforcers of Chairman Mao's campaign, become more brutal every day. Red Scarf Girl recounts Ji-li's fear of her family's arrest, and tells the story of how she tried to survive one of the worst eras in history.
3. The Chinese Cultural Revolution was launched in 1966 by Chairman Mao Zedong, leader of Communist China. The campaign's goal was to eradicate all anti-communist influences in the country, starting by removing fourolds, "old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. Many high-class families were considered capitalist, and persecuted by Red Guards, revolutionaries that greatly supported Mao and pioneered the Revolution.
